_ Biographical Information
Alex B studied at the Laban Centre for Movement and Dance in London. In 1991 she completed her degree and received the price for choreographers for her piece "Nights". From 1992 to 94 she was artist in residence in Hong Kong and dancer at the Pewan Chow, Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts. Since 1994 she has been living in Berlin and has regularly been producing her own works, for instance "Flesh and Blood" (1994, Akademie der K¸nste), "Perfect Strangers" (1995 / 97, Theater am Halleschen Ufer), "Private Thoughts- Public Places" (1996, Tanzfabrik Berlin), "The Fall" (1998, in cooperation with H. Mex and J. Wallmann, Kryptonale) "Small Things" (1998, Theaterforum Berlin) and "The lefthanded man" (1999, Tacheles) amongst others. From 1995 to 1998 she was a facultative member of the Etage, school for dance and acrobatics, where she created choreographies for students. In 1999 she was invited to teach at the Bejing Modern Dance Company and Dance Academy and at the CCDC Dance Company, Hong Kong.
In her work Alex B continuously searches for a choreographic form which captures the essence and tells its story and for dance, which takes shape as a language and which communicates directly. Hers are often choreographies of nearness which are developed out of unspectacular everyday moments. Alex B seeks to do fundamental movement research in a world which is flooded by stimuli. Her method of work is very physical and refers back to the British "physical dance theatre".
_ Current Production
In "Graceland" five dancers, two musicians, several toasters, a car battery, a video tape, toys, a shower and a bed meet. A rotating stage set enables an interplay between public and private space. ªGraceland" is a fiction. And like all fictions it is based on reality. It suggestively tells of spaces beyond all limits. How do women interact with each other? What motivates their behaviour? Constellations form, fragile constructions. The narrative threads cross and knot. One reconsiders one's identity , due to the comparison with the unfamiliar biography.
